Memory Supplement Safety Checklist for Phytomem Buyers

Quick answer

Before you take Phytomem, check your medicines, pregnancy and your pets. Berberine can change how the liver clears many drugs and may add to diabetes medicine, and it is not for pregnancy or breastfeeding. Xylitol, listed on the info page, is toxic to dogs. Memory changes that worry you need a doctor, not a supplement.

A memory supplement looks harmless: one tablet a day, plant names on the label. But Phytomem includes berberine, which acts on the liver and on blood sugar, and its info page lists xylitol, which is dangerous for dogs. This checklist walks through each risk and ends with a list you can tick off before the first tablet.

Why check

Why should you check Phytomem before the first tablet?

Because nobody checks it for you before it goes on sale. The FDA does not approve dietary supplements before they are sold (FDA, dietary supplement Q&A), so you and your doctor are the safety check.

With Phytomem, that check takes a little more work. The brand publishes no ingredient amounts and no label cautions, and it names six ingredients on one list and ten on another. So the notes below come from the research on each ingredient, not from the bottle.

Easiest first step: If you take any prescription medicine, bring the full list of ten names to your doctor or pharmacist. The Phytomem ingredients page has all of them in one place.

Medicines

Which medicines can clash with berberine and the other ingredients?

Berberine is the ingredient most likely to clash with a medicine. In healthy men, 900 mg a day for two weeks slowed three liver enzymes that clear many common drugs (Guo et al., 2012), which could raise the level of some medicines in the blood.

Medicine groups to raise with your doctor before starting
If you takeWhy it mattersSource
Diabetes medicineBerberine may lower blood sugar and interact with these drugs. Goldenseal, a berberine herb, cut metformin levels by about 25 percent.(NCCIH, diabetes and dietary supplements) (NCCIH, goldenseal)
Drugs the liver clearsBerberine slowed the enzymes CYP2D6, CYP2C9 and CYP3A4 in a small human study.(Guo et al., 2012)
Cyclosporine (transplant drug)A known berberine interaction.(NCCIH, berberine and weight loss)
Blood thinnersFucoidan may slightly raise bleeding risk with them.(ADDF Cognitive Vitality, fucoidan)
Some mental health drugsSaffron may interact with some of them.(MD Anderson, saffron)
Tamoxifen or methotrexateKudzu, on the info page list, may interact with both.(MSKCC, kudzu)

Cinnamon counts too: using herbs such as cinnamon alongside diabetes drugs can cause unwanted side effects (NCCIH, diabetes and dietary supplements). Every caution for Phytomem is also listed on the Phytomem side effects page.

Pregnancy

Is berberine safe in pregnancy, breastfeeding or around newborns?

No. Berberine can cause a harmful buildup of bilirubin that can damage a baby's brain, so it is likely unsafe for infants and may be unsafe in pregnancy or while breastfeeding (NCCIH, berberine and weight loss).

A pregnancy fact sheet adds that human pregnancy data are very limited and that berberine is not recommended while breastfeeding unless a doctor prescribes it (MotherToBaby, berberine).

Saffron supplements should also be avoided in pregnancy (Drugs.com, saffron monograph), and corosolic acid from banaba lacks safety data for pregnancy and breastfeeding (Drugs.com, corosolic acid monograph).

Clear rule: If you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding, skip Phytomem. It is also not for anyone under 18.

Dose limits

What dose limits apply to saffron and banaba?

Saffron is safe in food amounts, but large doses are toxic. Banaba's corosolic acid has one serious kidney case on record.

Saffron: grams, not milligrams, are the danger zone

About 5 g of saffron is linked to toxic effects, and about 20 g is considered a lethal dose (Drugs.com, saffron monograph). Trials used 30 mg of extract a day, far below that. People with kidney or bleeding disorders should avoid high-dose saffron supplements (MD Anderson, saffron).

Since Phytomem does not publish its saffron amount, do not stack it with another saffron product, and never take more than one tablet a day.

Banaba: one kidney injury case

A person with diabetes and reduced kidney function developed acute kidney injury and severe lactic acidosis after taking corosolic acid (Zheng et al., 2010). The patient was also taking a common pain reliever of the NSAID type (Drugs.com, corosolic acid monograph). One case proves little, but if your kidneys are weak, ask first.

Kudzu: rare liver and kidney reports

A cancer center lists case reports of liver and kidney problems with kudzu, and says people with hormone-sensitive cancer should avoid it (MSKCC, kudzu).

Pets

Why does xylitol matter if you have a dog?

Xylitol can cause a fast and possibly deadly drop in a dog's blood sugar, often within 10 to 60 minutes, sometimes up to 12 to 24 hours later (FDA, xylitol and dogs). It does not have that effect in people.

The Phytomem info page lists xylitol, and the amount per tablet is not published. Keep the bottle closed and up high, never leave a tablet on a low table, and call your vet at once if a dog gets into it.

Warning signs

Which memory changes should go to a doctor, not a supplement?

Occasional lapses, like forgetting which day it is and remembering later, are a normal part of aging. Problems that get in the way of daily life are a reason to see a doctor (NIA, memory problems and aging).

Everyday lapses next to signs worth a checkup
Usually normalWorth a doctor visit
Forgetting which day it is, then remembering laterGetting lost in places you know well
A lapse that comes back to you a little laterAsking the same questions over and over
Slips that do not get in the way of your dayProblems that interfere with daily life

Some causes of memory trouble can be treated once they are found. A supplement should never delay that visit, and Phytomem is not a treatment for memory loss, dementia or Alzheimer's disease.

Red flags

How can you spot an unproven Alzheimer's product?

Look for disease words. The FDA has sent warning letters to companies selling more than 58 products, many of them supplements, that claimed to prevent, treat or cure Alzheimer's (FDA, unproven Alzheimer's products).

In 2019 the FTC and FDA warned more sellers and said health claims must rest on competent and reliable scientific evidence (FTC and FDA, 2019 warning letters). The FTC's plain advice: a product that suggests it can treat or cure a disease is probably a fraud (FTC, ask before popping that pill).

Safe buying

How do you buy Phytomem safely?

Buy through the official order links on gophytomem.com, so this desk's refund window applies, and check the bottle when it arrives.

  1. Check the price

Packs run $49 to $79 a bottle, one-time, with no 1-bottle pack. A far lower price elsewhere is a warning sign.

  2. Check the label

The front should read PHYTOMEM ONE, Memory, Focus, Clarity, Dietary Supplement, 30 Tablets.

  3. Check the order email

It shows who processed the payment and carries your tracking link.

  4. Keep the paperwork

Save the order ID. Refunds run 60 days from purchase through +1 (302) 200-3480 or [email protected].

Checklist

What is on the safety checklist?

Go through every line before the first tablet. If any line gives you pause, stop and ask your doctor or pharmacist first.

  • I am 18 or older, not pregnant, not trying to get pregnant and not breastfeeding
  • My doctor or pharmacist has seen all ten ingredient names
  • I do not take diabetes medicine, cyclosporine or blood thinners without a doctor's OK
  • I do not take another saffron or berberine product at the same time
  • My kidneys and liver are healthy, or my doctor has cleared this
  • I will take one tablet a day with food, and never more
  • The bottle is stored where dogs cannot reach it
  • Memory changes that worry me or my family have been checked by a doctor
  • I bought through the official store and saved my order ID

For the dose behind each name, read Phytomem vs the research. For saffron alone, see saffron and memory explained.
